Volunteering in one elephant sanctuary near Chiang Mai counts as one of my best experiences I’ve had on my travels. Recently, I read an article in Nat Geo were I learnt the owners of these sanctuaries are abusing the animals and volunteering became yet another tourist trap...and it broke my heart.
